N.O.I.S.E. for PS65

The petition

We the undersigned oppose the impending school enrollment policy for PS65
(formerly PS15) located at 98 Grant Street, Stapleton, Staten Island, namely
the DOE's decision to allow preferential admittance for newly enrolled
students to PS45 zone, then "open enrollment" for all of District 31.

PS65 is centrally located within the PS16 zone. Residents of the PS16 zone
who can walk their children to this school should have equal, if not
preferential, use of PS65, based on geographical, environmental and economic
grounds. In this era of "greening" the City, the DOE's current enrollment
policy poses ecological and economic issues, imposing traffic and pollution
on narrow, one-way streets that include and border an historic district. We
demand that the policy allowing preferential admittance for students newly
enrolled to PS45 be removed, and amended to assure unobstructed enrollment
to the neighborhood children who are within walking distance to the school.

DOE/OSEPO's ruling will in no way alleviate the overcrowding at 45. In fact,
if the population zoned for PS16 were offered other than a failing school, it is
likely that PS45 would not be overcrowded.
