We Oppose Trent's Non-Academic Code of Misconduct

The petition

Whereas, it is not within Trent University's mandate, nor within its professional capabilities, to regulate the social, moral and political behavior of students;

Whereas, the inadequately trained review committee has complete latitude to recommend any sanction for any complaint (from a warning to expulsion);

Whereas, a student may have to take a course from a faculty member who would have encountered the student through the misconduct review process;

Whereas, there is no clear definition of misconduct;

Whereas, human rights and discrimination complaints fall under the jurisdiction of Trent's Policy on Discrimination and Harassment, the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Canadian judicial system;

Whereas, four years ago a similar policy was proposed and then withdrawn due to overwhelming opposition from students, faculty and staff;

We oppose the "Student Non-Academic Misconduct Policy."
