The petition

We the undersigned parents and legal guardians of Mtn View Elementary School students want the aforementioned school and its affiliates (PTO etc..) to no longer send home any fundraising materials and/or information. We believe it is unfair to both the parents and children to expect us to raise money in this way. Many parents are not allowed to take fundraising materials to their workplace. This makes it very difficult for them to sell the "suggested minimum" for their child/children. It is even harder still when the children are told that they will not be able to attend the fundraiser party if they do not sell a certain amount. The child is in effect being punished because their parents were unable to raise the required amount of money. This causes some parents to simply buy the necessary amount themselves. Unfortunately, not all parents can afford that luxury for varying reasons (multiple children, low income, etc...). We understand the School's need for extra funding from time to time. With that in mind, we suggest that the School send a letter home with each child asking for donations instead. The School could then have a party for all students if the goal is met. This would greatly reduce the pressure put on students and parents alike. Parents could contribute based on their financial capabilities with some contributing more than others. In turn, students would all be able to attend parties and not be singled out because of their parents inability to secure the required funds. In addition, the contributions would be tax-deductible for parents, which could lead to larger donations.
