Under the Constitution of the Order of Canada, a recipient can be stripped of the honour if “the person has been convicted of a criminal offence”, among other things. Mr. Morgentaler was convicted of a criminal offence and despite his eventual acquittal in 1976, he did go against the law, he did serve time in jail, and to many people, he did kill babies. Many people did not want him to be acquitted, and this divisiveness in our society alone should be reason enough for him not to be named to the Order.
I am heartened to read of Cardinal Turcotte, Mr. Finn, and others who have decided to return their Order of Canada awards in reaction to the naming of Mr. Morgentaler to the Order, and it is terribly sad that such actions are required; sadder still that they are not sufficient to reverse the decision. This said, I am happy to add my name to this petition. What a role model for the Canadian people, and for the world at large! |
