WHO ARE WE?
Speech-language pathologists (S-LPs) are highly trained professionals who can help people make their lives richer, more productive and enjoyable through improved communication skills. We identify, assess and treat children and adults with communication disorders.
In the public school setting we collaborate with teachers, parents and other educators. We strive to help the more than 10% of students who have speech, language, auditory, voice and stuttering disorders. Most of these students encounter barriers to accessing the curriculum and fully developing language and literacy skills as a result of their communication disorder.
Speech-language pathologists care passionately about the needs of students.
• 10% of students have educationally relevant needs that require intervention by a S-LP. (over 6000 Surrey students)
• 1% of Canadians and 4% of pre-schoolers have a stuttering disorder.
• Communication disorders in school-aged children are often misdiagnosed as learning disabilities.
• Children with behavioural disorders are ten times more likely to have undetected language disorders.
BACKGROUND
The needs of communicatively impaired students in Surrey, the largest school district in BC, far exceed the level of service that a staff of 23 S-LPs can provide. We are working hard to increase awareness of the need to restore and improve staffing levels that were cut three years ago. These cuts reduced our staffing level by 20% and increased workloads by almost 50%.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
May is designated as Speech, Language and Hearing Month around the world. At this time we feel it is appropriate to advocate with a collective voice by raising awareness and seeking support for the need to increase staffing levels. Students who have communication disorders deserve every effort we can make to better meet their needs.
If you support the need for improved services to communicatively impaired students in Surrey, help us by signing this petition. |
