To: The Danish Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Helge Sander; Members of the Danish Natural Science Research Council; the Head of the Copenhagen Ringing Centre; and the Head of the Zoological Museum, Copenhagen :
We, the undersigned are writing for your support in a controversy surrounding our colleague, Dr. Anders Pape Møller. He was accused, by a former colleague in Copenhagen, of fabricating data on leaf asymmetry in oaks. This former colleague is someone who lost his job as associate professor at the University of Copenhagen following an investigation by the Chancellor of the University instigated by complaints about dysfunction in the Zoology Department made by Anders Pape Møller when he was professor there. A subcommittee of the Danish Commission for Scientific Dishonesty, that contained members that were not impartial to the case, subsequently decided against him. Following this subcommittee decision, though the accusation had nothing to do with his bird ringing activities, the Danish Ringing Centre, decided to revoke Anders Pape Møller's bird ringing license. This means the termination of a long term study on barn swallows that has been underway for 34 years.
The study to date has been fruitful and scientifically important, and given the dearth of high quality long term studies, especially in light of the current biodiversity crisis, it is shameful that such a study be terminated because of jealousy among colleagues.
We the undersigned are asking for the following:
1) A full and impartial inquiry into proceedings by the Danish Commission for Scientific Dishonesty against Anders Moller. This inquiry should be conducted in a manner that ensures a fair, just and impartial treatment of this case.
2) The reinstatement of Dr. Moller’s bird ringing license until such time that a fair and impartial inquiry can be made. |
