Keep All Kindergarten Options at Grace McWayne Elementary

The Batavia Public Schools Board of Education has proposed eliminating full-day kindergarten for the district OR sending full-day kindergarten students from Grace McWayne to another facility in the district. These measures have been proposed as an alternative to resolving the boundary variance issue in order to reduce overcrowding at the school.

AS RESIDENTS OF GRACE MCWAYNE ELEMENTARY BOUNDARY AREA, we URGE the Batavia Public Schools Board of Education to keep full-day and half-day kindergarten at Grace McWayne and to eliminate boundary variances in order to alleviate overcrowding.

Full day kindergarten has been found to benefit students academically and was adopted as part of the Batavia Public Schools Curriculum. As parents, we feel strongly about the value of full-day kindergarten and many families have moved to this district because of the quality of education in Batavia, including the full-day kindergarten curriculum. We do not want this option to be eliminated.

Sending kindergarten students to another facility for full-day kindergarten would present many difficult issues for families:
• separating siblings to different schools
• busing 5 and 6 year olds to another school or posing difficult transportation issues for parents who must transport children to 2 different schools
• requiring kindergarten students to spend their first year of elementary school at one school, only to have to change schools and reorient the following year
• splitting the time and resources of parents who want to support teachers and staff at 2 different buildings

We urge the Board of Education consider the best interest of these youngest students and keep equal opportunity to attend full-day or half-day kindergarten at neighborhood schools across the district.

This petition will be delivered to the Batavia Public Schools Board of Education before their scheduled meeting to decide on this matter (7pm on Tuesday, February 8th at the Administration Center, located at 336 W. Wilson Street).
