Sen. McCain: This Is Not a Christian Nation, Our Faith Depends On It It is a grave mistake for a man who would be president to undermine the integrity of another religion and invest his faith with the imprimatur of the state. As Christians living in a nation of diverse faith traditions, we urge Senator John McCain to withdraw his recent false and outrageous claim that the United States is a Christian nation and his stated preference for a religious test for president. Sen. McCain stated that "the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation." When asked if a Muslim candidate could be a good president, Sen. McCain stated that he would prefer to see a president with "a solid grounding" in his Christian faith. Sen. McCain should recognize that the United States Constitution specifically avoids establishing a State religion. Sen. McCain should further acknowledge that there is no religious test for public office in America . The strength of our democracy rests upon our respect for all religions. Our religious vitality depends on the right of every citizen to freely express one's faith and participate in the political process at every level. As Americans, and as Christians, we cherish the religious freedom of all Americans. An affront against one religion is an affront against them all. We deplore the hurtful words of Sen. McCain and any public figure who would falsely declare America to be a Christian nation or disparage any particular religion. We urge all who seek public office to reject the politics of fear and division, and to embrace the principles of religious freedom and pluralism that make our nation great.
