Warren JessopPahoa and KiheiI acquired a TVA license from the state of Hawaii and commenced TVR in my Kihei home in January 2007. I contacted Maui County to inquire about the protocol for being legal with the County, but they told me not to worry, and that they weren't even handing out or processing applications at that time. I have moved to the Big Island (December 2006) to support a business I opened there, and depend upon the TVR of my home in Kihei to keep the home for my family. I manage the rental, and have no complaints. If the County shuts me down, I will be foreclosed upon. They have already hurt me during the last 2 months!

ColleenNapili, MauiIn an effort to keep family property in the family, I was planning to start a vacation rental business in a second home planned for my property near Kapalua. I think what the county has done regarding vacation rentals on Maui is unlawful, and will cause other local families to loose family properties because they cannot afford to keep them otherwise. Something needs to change, fast! Mahalo, Colleen Dagan
Jono KNightHaikuPlease do not continue with the unfair shut down of TVR's. You will be the cause of an economic down-turn for Maui, especially on the north shore. Please organise a realistic and practical TVR permiting system and regulation policy. Thank you.
AnonymousKihei/MaalaeaHonorable Mayor Tavaras: If we are going to "go back" to the mid 60's(Maui no ka o'), does that mean you are going to "uninstall" all those traffic lights, which seem to have no end to showing up on all our streets and highways!!

AnonymousWailukuIt's time for the County to get over it,, get their act together and get the job done. This is another attack on small business and we have to wonder who or what entity is really driving this oppresion. The vacation rental problems are relatively few compared to the economic consequences for many. Control it don't kill it. Put it on the ballot to see if there is really a silent majority for or against and stop the speculation. The County has made repeated mistakes and the little guy is paying for them, again. I'm not an operator , don't know any and really don't care, this is just not right. Politico's, you've had a decade to take care of business and you have failed again. Get it done or get the hell out.

Karin PhaneufWailukuThis administration seems to have no information about running a county government. The Housing & Human Concerns department is sadly misinformed about this issue. Families depend on this income and the administration of Maui County does not seem to care! Are we able to impeach?
Jessica BurkeMolokaiI am a concerned resident of Maui County. The current crack down on Vacation Rentals is going to hurt our economy in a big way. There must be a way to compromise. Local families and businesses relay on our elected officials to look out for everyones interest, not just a few. Please work together with aloha and solve this problem in an equitable manner. Vacation Rentals are a low impact way to encourage tourism and sustainability. Thank you.
wesley wonghaikuThis maui county government is totally wrong to stop the vacation rental and B&B business anywhere on island of maui and molokai. I believe the damage has been already done and alot of good people have been hurt by the county of maui's government and it's current mayor. sign naitive hawaiian.
markluzern, switzerlandhmm sounds bad. 1 of my lifedreams is once to go to maui and live i a cheap accomodation (because it is a very expensive flighjt to maui). sounds like that when closing down. i will be stuck to expensive hotels... $

Samuel KalalauKiheiI Support vacation rentals. Aloha!
Dennis WeberNorwell MaMy first trip to Maui we utilized the accomodations of your hotel/buisness zone which for my family proved only acceptable. Only because of the beauty of the island we chose to return. Our next two trips we enjoyed the hospitality offered by the private home owners on the island. If not for the ability to choose where we stay I can assure you we would not have returned.

AnonymousKiheiWhy are we putting up with this Mayor? Vote her out!
Lisa CoffinSherwood Park, AB CanadaWe enjoy visiting Maui year after year and love the fact that we can spend our stay in beautiful comfy homes. They are reasonably priced, private, and most of all gives the sense of "home" when you are on vacation. I am saddened to hear this may change.
AnonymousHaiku, MauiOne question: Who benefits from the Mayor's actions?
Christina StoutPukalani
Mrs A PapilleHaikuWe regularly use neighboring vacation rentals to accommodate our family when they come from Kauai. This is ridiculous. You are getting rid of a resource that many local people use and appreciate. What is the matter with you?

CherylHaikuTaking away more tourism and jobs on Maui is just crazy. It only hurts us. Having cottages for travelers increases jobs for gardners, housekeepers, and residents trying to make an income to live on Maui. I believe the people who built cottages for this purpous should fall into a grandfather clause to remain working their vacation rentals. Travlers coming to Maui can have an option not to spend money they perhaps cannot afford at the expensive hotels here. Cottages give them another avenue.

AnonymousHaikuTVR's do need to be regulated but not eliminated.
i. szabo-davismolokaiif i did that kind of damage to other people's livelihoods i would land in prison. legal and moral are two different concepts. moloka'i has mostly interim zoning. why is this not included in the permitting process? it seems to me that the gestapo of maui is bent on shutting down moloka'i's economy and make sure that the island's population is applying for foodstamps. moloka'i is depending on the 70 thousand visitors it gets annually. people need to notice that most of the tourists are traveling on a budget, or they will not come. not everyone can afford to rent at moloka'i ranch. there simply are not enough affordable places available to stay. or should they all bring a tent? this does not make any sense. some very sinister plot is at play here. just follow the money!
AnonymousKaunakakaiI support vacation rentals because our economy on Molokai depends heavily on it. Without that the drug problem is just going to get way worse.

Tracy EdelhertzPukalaniI have met several local small business owners who are now struggling to feed their families because of this situation and as a member of the community, I feel backstabbed by our own county. I also know that several vacation rental owners have sold their homes to families who do not live here and will only be here maybe 1 month out of the year. I am not sure how this helps support local economy or affordable housing. Now a situation of empty homes without incoming income to the community will become the norm. I don't see how that helps create neighborhoods or implements measures for affordable housing.
Blaise NotoKiheiIt is a travesty what is happening to this island -- all about the interest of BIG BUSINESS and not for the land or its people. And this is just one more example. SHAME! I know how I will vote in the next election.
liona shareingkiheiDear Mayor, I have seen your policy on vacation rentals and wonder what has happened to the aloha you should have for the people of Maui? You know the facts, yet you persist in perscuting people who are trying to make a living, many who depend on this income fo pay high mortgages. Not only that, you are affecting the local small business's that depend on the customer's that stay in them for much of their income. I am not a person who owns a vacation rental, but I know that when we do travel, we seek out private homes that rent them so we can have affordable vacations along with meetithe local people and making new friends. I have heard that you are doing this for big business's so they don't have competition when they open hotels upcountry? That you are getting kick backs for punishing the people and closing them down. If this is true then shame on you! I have read in the maui newspaper that you said there are over" legal" 1000 vacation rentals visitors can stay at. You know that is a drop in the bucket to the amount of tourists that come here. Please soften your heart and let the vacation rentals alone. best wishes, Liona Shareing
Anonymouskiheiwe know the real reason you want to shut down these rentals-you've made deals with developers-that have payed you off!!!-you know who you are-mr. and mrs.people in power.
AnonymousWailukuI'm in an industry dependent on the Vacation Rentals that would drastically be affected. My whole way of life would change!
Boyd ThomasKiheiMake life easier for all concerned. There is no reason to shut down and fine these good people of Maui. It is something that helps all, the tourists, the owners and the people with business's surrounding them.
Kalani WhitfordKula
Todd Van AmburghKula
Traci SilvaKiheiI feel that if you own a property, you have the right to do whatever you want with it as a responsible home owner. Period. If the Mayor and her Council want to ban homeowners from doing what they want with their properties, then they should be paying their mortgages too. This is ridiculous. Where does it stop? Where does the government stop meddling in the affairs of its people? Whatever happened to the laissez faire attitude of free enterprise?
