Maui Residents Petition Signatures

Allan J ReidKiheiSuch small operators add flavour and character to a community. Without them, all we would have are the big hotel chains. Such is not my idea of Aloha on Maui. The county should be doing all it can to encourage cottage industries by reducing needless regulations and streamlining the process for obtaining permits.
R W SLahainaThe County will only be hurting itself in the long run if the TVR ban is enacted. Please, Maui County, show the people some data to back up your assertions that vacation rentals are detrimental to neighborhoods, the general welfare of Maui, and that they have little or no public support. Please remember that your role is to serve the will of your constituents, not impose restrictions against the wil of the people.

Lawrence LademanMaunaloaI hope the County has assessed the possible costs of this clearly selective enforcement. Besides wasting HUGE amounts of tax payer’s dollars and severely damaging the tourist industry, most residents can see the real reason for this action and its intended consequences. Facts are, as others have clearly stated, this will not increase hotel occupancy but will have extreme negative affects on Maui's economy and especially of Molokai's by driving these visitors to other islands and away from Hawaii. If this is what is intended, then put a halt to any new condo, timeshare or hotel projects. Molokai cannot afford the loss of a single job. You will not spare one hotel employees job by this action yet will cost hundreds of jobs and some people to lose their homes. This will not provide more affordable housing. Whoever started that myth does not know how to spell economics. Someone please help the County before it economically destroys the people who pay its bills!!
Joy ShahbazianHaikuIt si shocking that this administration is willing to hurt so many on Maui. This will be a loose for everyone including the county as visitors go elsewhere. The housing market has will be a serious blow. Lower Housing prices mean lower property taxes. Is any one in government thinking??

Sara WeinbergKahuluiDoes Mayor Tavares have memory loss or is she simply unethical? I say we all band together and refuse to shut our TVR's. How did Oprah Winfrey obtain a permit in 10 months, while others have been in limbo 10 years. We cannot let our government get away with this sort of discrimination!! Let's start a petition to recall the mayor now!! If Arnold did it in California, we can do it here. Get rid of the unethical outdated members of our government.. RECALL RECALL RECALL!! Tavares has not done one good thing in 8 months, and Hunt has the nerve to say he is damned either way! Tavares and Hunt are obviously incompetent if their only solution is to hurt the hard working people of Maui. HOW DARE THEM!! RECALL RECALL RECALL NOW

Cheryl CorbiellKawela Gardens, MolokaiVacations Rentals have always asked for regulation and an efficient process for applications. It is the county that did not draft regulations. The Planning Department recommended TVRs wait for regulations. In private industry such action would be considered incompetent planning. Grandfather the current TVR operators and work on regulations in dialogue not the current state of fear. There are already economic impacts on Molokai with not enough places to stay for the Molokai Channel paddlers. Many TVRS have stopped renting. The men's race is already finding the same shortage.

ChrisNew Caledoniait's a sad news for people in Maui, I very love this island, people are so easy and friendly. my favorite pro windsurfers live there. Ohana means family, and it's my goal to live in maui for sharing my passion, it's the earth of windsurfing. I hope the County change his decision. Mahalo everybody

AnonymousKiheiThe prices of homes coupled w/ low paying jobs force us to share our dwellings in order to survive!
AnonymousMakawaoRegulating vacatio rentals is fine...but reasonable laws that allow locals to make a living via this income alternative are necessary. Mahalo.
J Michael KanouffKulaHow much aloha can be shared with our visitors to Maui if they stay in a condo or large hotel? I have lived my 15 years on the east side and have witnessed hundreds of visitors swooning from the personalized care and aloha given to them by the owners of small bed and breakfast. Leave these people alone and bring our infrastructure in line with the population of Maui, in other words, stop killing The Golden Goose! Thank you for your attention Michael Kanouff

Barry HymanHaiku, HawaiiI am a Maui businessman, Rotarian, and am active in social and community associations and boards. Through my profession I am also somewhat of an economist. Denying this cottage industry (no pun intended) would serve a blow to many resident tax payers, businesses, the tourist industry and multi-faceted fabric of Maui. The tourists who stay in vacation rental homes and cottages are not likely to accept hotels as a replacement. Especially those who choose to vacation in rural areas such as East Maui. Those visitors a much more likely to vacation elsewhere. It will also make no improvement whatsoever in the housing shortage. If the goal of the council is political, I would like to go on record as stating active community members such as myself will pledge to work to unseat any and all council members who support this ban, either outwardly or tacitly by inaction. This is not to say vacation rentals should be let to run wild. There are inappropriate locales as well as appropriate ones for such business. It should be regulated and neighbors should have influence in the process. Please support regulating the vacation rentals and do so before this ban goes into effect.
Reta ChinPukalaniWe are a luxury resort island known world-wide as one of - if not - the Best Islands in the World. There are those who save up their entire lives just to arrive here, and do not want hotel living, but desire their island getaway at a bed and breakfast property. Why tighten the already difficult noose around those owners on Maui who are looking to survive this national weak economy???

AnonymousKaunakakai, MolokaiMy wife and I own a home in Molokai and rent our home as a vacation rental. Since the completion of construction on our home in 2007, we have provided/infused over $600,000 back into the Molokai community via way of employment and/or services utilized by ALL LOCAL Molokai entities. We continually infuse monies into the community by way of all the guests that SPEND their dollars on Molokai in one way or another. We feel it would be an ireversable economic affect on the community as a whole if the infusion of tourist/guest dollars ceased; along with the impact on us as homeowners, and how this would also directly affect our families, children etc... PLEASE assist and help keep the economy of Molokai looking brighter with all the jobs that have been created by way of our vacation rental homes. Assist with continual travel to Molokai by the wonderful people who have made Molokai their destination; and ultimately have carved out new friendships between themselves and the local community. 782 Steve O'DonnellNapiliWhen I travel I always prefer bed and breakfast rentals for my stay. It is the perfect way to travel and you feel like you are putting money in the local peoples pockets rather than some giant hotel. Aloha, Steve

Ulrike HölzlAustriaI came to Maui a lot of times and enjoyed its beauty. for windsurfers the rental of bed and breakfast appartements is very important. if it is ging to bne shut down there will be a big problem for the tourism and on maui...

Laura MatthewsKihei, Maui, HIHome/villa vacation rentals are a sign of the times a most poplular mode of housing for the experienced traveler. Other destinations embrace the home/villa traveler and I am surprised that Maui County would chase away these important vistiors and the money they spend throughout Maui while here. They will not opt for a hotel on Maui, they will choose another state/country and hence the situation becomes a LOSE/LOSE situation. Please don't let this happen. I value my life on Maui, and that of my childrens'. Don't make us leave the State.

RUDI KINGNapiliI don't see how this Ban could possible help the economy in the long term? A personal disappointment regarding this matter, my fiance and I have lived here on Maui for 5 years, and have to decided to get married here. We were disappointed to find that renting a large estate in Hana might be impossible. What will ahppen to residents who can longer afford to keep properties that generate income to cover the mortgage? They'll have to sell...then what a surplus of homes. That's excactly what we don't need.
