Jarreau PhilippeParis - FranceRent à house or appartement in a country is the only solution to known the local culture and give benefits for the local economy - I like this lifestyle in Maui since 1998 Philippe Jarreau Professeur à l'Université de Paris VIII - Institut Français d'Urbanisme et d'Aménagement

AnonymousHaikuWhen I travel I seek out a quaint, personal-style b&b. Taking that away from our options to visitors is unfair and seems unconstitutional. We need to strive for more personalized experiences, not only having a generic environment like a hotel/condo.
AnonymousKihei, HIWe need to find a happy medium with this thriving business and cannot simply shut down everyone.

Frank KuhlmannLos Altos, CAMaui is my favorite vacation spot and I have been coming here over 10 times, always in vacation rentals.
Unmani Cynthia GrovesKihei (Maui MeadowsI strongly request strengthening the landlord tenant code languaging designating specifics regarding strict rules and regulations for the property and unit, and what the financial penalty will be deducted from their deposits for infractions --with a requirement that this be SIGNED in advance of renting with a required deposit and given to tenants, vacation renters AND applicable to their guests to cover such infractions of noise and odor abuse, drug use, violation of parking requirements spelled out, That if the dwelling is designated an all nonsmoking home, smoking shall not be allowed in or on the property or impede the neighbors enjoyment. If it is a smoking property, there must be designated smoking areas such that tenants do not impede the enjoyment of kamaina neighbors in either single, multifamily or multiunit dwellings.

AnonymousMaalaeaPlease streamline the permit process, make vacation rental regulations that protect all parties involved: renters, owners and neighbors, charge resonalble annual permit fees, close down the fee operators that do not abide by the new regulations or obtain permits in a reasonable amount of time as dictated by the new regulations, and bring the aloha back to our communitites.

GIOVANNI BUSIVENICE - ITALYThe beauty of Maui and of Hawaii is just the nature and to have the chance to stay in bed and breakfast and vacation homes is the best way to appreciate this out of adulterated world of hotel and business zoned areas. There is not Maui's spirit in hotel and business-zoned areas

uwe weinkaufMountain ViewSo, does this mean we – the tourists who bring a lot of money to Maui - will only get to stay in hotels? I wonder who is lobbying to ban vacation rentals then! I have come to Maui many times and if I had to stay in a hotel it would cost me an arm and a leg. Vacation rentals on the other hand have given me always a good and more homey alternative to avoid costly and small hotel rooms. Another big plus of vacations rentals is that often I like to stay in the non touristy areas and there are simply no hotels. It sounds to me that the big hotel groups on Maui may want to get the money the little guys make. But in either case, many people who love to come to Maui may consider to go to other islands if they are forced only to stay in hotels. So, isn’t it always about money, right? Certainly someone gets some money here in the short run, but whoever is in charge now, think about the long term as well!
Chris and Becky SpeereHueloI love to stay in vacation B&Bs when I travel abroad. Please allow this here on Maui.
Aileen PapilleHaikuWe have a small 1-bedroom ohana so our friends and relatives always stay in nearby vacation rentals when they come to visit us. Where the heck are they going to stay if you shut them down? We want them near us, not in a Kihei condo. This is insane. You a taking away a valuable service to the local community.
Scott McKayArlington, MassachusettsI am not a resident of Maui, and so my signing this petition has no legal standing as such. However, I would like to encourage you not to close down the many B&B and vacation rental homes on Maui's North Shore. I have visited Maui several times and always stay in North Shore rental homes. I respect the residents of Maui, their property and their customs. I shop at local markets and businesses, eat at local cafes, try to live a "local life" while I am there. Visiting places this way is how I travel, to learn to know a place deeply. If you remove such rental properties from the market, I will not be able in good conscience to visit Maui again, which would be a great disappointment. I urge you to better regulate such properties, but not eliminate them. I understand the need to keep affordable housing for residents, and I understand the corrosive effect that absentee landlords have on communities. But I urge you to seek a middle ground on this. Don't lose travelers like me, who respect the people and traditions of Hawai'i. Don't lose my contribution to your economy. Please please find a way to balance the concerns, taking into account the needs of your residents and respectful travelers such as myself and my family. Thank you. --Scott McKay

Martha Cottenhaiku, hiI agree with the statement completely. It does help our local economy. It seems sensless that we would drive people away from visiting areas of the island that are less populated & visited...it is so nice to be able to share our own personal piece of paradise with those who take the time, energy, and financial commitment to seek us out on the internet or other source. Many customers are returning to the island and will be disappointed if they are forced to stay in a resort or hotel...we may lose those visitors altogether, as they will seek out places that are more quaint and affordable.
Roxie LyppsCrested ButteFamily operated homes for short-term rental are a positive addition to communities and contribute to the local tax base. Fair regulations will insure that neighborhoods are not harmed.

Marc LefebvreKahuluiI think that the county should really be embracing these small businesses and enable them as best as they can. They are truly an asset to our community and economy. I have MANY friends who come to maui and stay on the northshore. Sadly, they are planning to go elsewhere.
Steven HartmanChicago, IL.Please DO NOT ban vacation rentals. They are much better deals and more of a hawaii experince than the hotels. I ahve been comig to hawaii yearly for over 17 years and would be very disspointed if vacation rentals were nto availbel. This seems like something teh BIG hotels are wanting to get pushed thorugh.

Kristine HarveyDavis, CAI come to Maui to vacation specifically because of the personal interaction with staying in a B&B. I dislike the impersonal atmosphere of large hotels and would vacation elsewhere if vacation rentals on Maui were no longer allowed.
