| 1055 | Paul | Rattin | | | I never thought the day would come that I would say that I'm ashamed to be a Marquette Graduate but the decision of the Board of Trustees on May 5, 2005 has done it.
I'm embarrassed... not that the leadership of our University took a bad situation and made it worse, but at the thinking behind their decision or in this case, the lack of it! In effect, by choosing the Gold, they have upset both sides of the issue while trying to find middle ground. I remember in High School hearing the saying "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything" and I think that stands true for our University. I can honestly say that I no longer know the ideals or the values of Marquette University. I thought I knew, but I guess I was wrong. In it’s attempts to appease every possible person in the world, they’re alienating the most valuable part of OUR University... the students and the alumni!
When I was at Marquette, the Jesuit motto "Excellence in all things" was displayed all over, but can we really believe that there was excellence in the latest nickname fiasco? So a board of 38 people decided on what best represents the University rather than relying on its students and its alumni? I think it's evident that this decision reeks of something other than the best interests of the students and the alumni. What could it be? I guess we will never know unless the BOT faces a forum of alumni and students and gives us straight and honest answers. What's the likelihood of that? We all know the answer... zero. While the BOT may face a forum, can we really believe their answers? I think the overwhelming sentiment is NO, and that's pretty damn embarrassing for a CATHOLIC institution.
So the latest slogan at MU is "Be the Difference". I thought I understood what MU was trying to say... don't be mediocre, be strong, make a difference. Yet, after yesterday I really question my understanding. It seems as if the BOT is telling us that to be the difference we have to be DIFFERENT. So in effect, let's get away from the Warriors and Golden Eagles and let's pick a nickname that will really be DIFFERENT. That's what troubles me about this nickname, where's the tradition? Nobody believes the BOT’s spin-doctoring that the Gold has some sort of connection with our University’s rich tradition. While the BOT may have been strongly opposed to the Warriors nickname, they could have still connected with our tradition with either the Golden Avalanche or the Hilltoppers. I don’t think there are many students or alumni who would have opposed this move.
The most ironic part of this entire fiasco is the dichotomy of the decision of the BOT. On one hand, the BOT was unable to “think outside of the box” and disassociate the Native American imagery from the Warrior mascot. On the other hand we have the BOT “thinking outside of the box” and coming up with a new nickname. Why are they using two different decision-making techniques in their analysis? One of the reasons to “think outside of the box” is to solve a problem where there is no easy or available solution. Yet in this case, the decision was simple and evident… Pick between the Warriors, Golden Eagles, or return to a previous nickname.
So will the Warriors nickname debate ever go away? Absolutely not, as one of the founders of the Alumni for Warriors, I will continue to pursue every course of action to return to the Warriors. We played nice, we tried to meet half way, now it’s time for the gloves to come off. Let me ask one question, does the BOT expect to see more or less Warriors Forever t-shirts with the Native American Imagery at sporting events next year? This decision will upset the Pro-Warriors faction and I guarantee that the Native American Imagery of the Warriors nickname will re-emerge. The only way for the University to bury the imagery of the past was a return to the Warriors nickname with a new mascot. How did they miss that??
So where does that leave me now? Well as I don’t feel that the University properly aligns with my values and beliefs, I don’t feel as if I can support the University any longer. I will not contribute financially, through recruiting, or through any other channel. I find the behavior of the BOT appalling and reeks of personal agendas and closed-door agreements. I always told my wife that our children would attend Marquette, but yesterday I told her that it’s open again. I can no longer claim that Marquette is the great institution that I thought it was, but now it’s on par with all of the public institutions in the country.
LONG LIVE THE WARRIORS!! |

As a marquette student I feel ashamed to be a member of a community that will write a petition, which I fully support, but not have the intelligence to spell correctly. Please check your document before you post something like this to the public. |
| 1064 | Nicole | Nault | | US | Change it back to Warriors already.. please! |

As a marquette student I feel ashamed to be a member of a community that will write a petition, which I fully support, but not have the intelligence to spell words correctly. Please check your document before you post something like this to the public. Thank you. |

| 1069 | Russell | Twiehaus | IL | US | the nickname should be warriors, but if that cannot be worked out, there is a better alternative than 'Gold' |

| 1082 | David | Cleary | IL | US | If it can't go back to warriors, keep Golden Eagles |
| 1083 | Michael | Zak | MN | US | This is outrageous. Bring back the Warriors!!!! |
| 1084 | Gina | Cicero | WI | US | I still find it infathomable to think that those who claim to have our best interests in mind, disenfranchised us (the students) during finals time, knowing we would not have the time needed to fight this change. |
| 1085 | Michael | Flynn | WI | US | What were you thinking? |
| 1086 | James | Crawford | | | |
| 1087 | Stephen | Puhr | | | I support the students in determining the school's nickname and mascot. I propose that the Warriors nickname be re-established with the image of a greek Warrior used to re-brand the Warriors. |
| 1088 | Rich | Karolczak | OH | US | In classic Marquette fashion, you once again have ignored the wishes of your students and alumni. I fund the arrogance of O'Hara Hall to be reprehensible. |
| 1089 | Paul | Krappman | | US | |
| 1090 | Lyn | Dowling | FL | | You can call it the Golden Eagles or Gold (my, doesn't that smack of non Jesuit materialism!)or whatever you'd like. I will always be a Warrior.
|
| 1091 | Jim | Carver | OH | US | The end result of this decision will result in apathy among the MU community, please reconsider. |
| 1092 | Erin | Byrne | | | The name change is embarrassing. I was in favor of going back to the Warriors will a non-discriminatory name.
I thought the University was taking the right actions by surveying alumni. I would never say this but I would rather be a Golden Eagle than the GOLD.
The board made a terrible decision on just changing the name. Now the University looks terrible on a National scale.
Also I believe we are going into the Big East as the laughing stock of college sports!
So if it can't be Warriors it should stay Golden Eagles! |
| 1093 | Andrew | Dube | | | |
| 1094 | Ernie | Watts | | | Absolutely pathetic. Warriors Forever! |
| 1095 | Andrew | Lemminger | | | |
| 1096 | Adam | Kleist | | | |
| 1097 | Patrick | Palecek | | | |
| 1098 | Sean | Carroll | WI | | Why? |
| 1099 | Randall | Holterman | | US | The selection of a mascot should be done be the students, not the Trustees. Especially since the trustees have twice shown themselves incapable of reasonable and logical analysis of the issue. Student selection of mascots is the normal way ot do it. |
| 1100 | John | Barrett | | | While I was hopeful for a return to the Warriors, I realized there was a low probability of this occurring. However, given the consultative and extensive process the BOT went through, I was prepared to accept a continuation of the Golden Eagles. I have closely followed this debate for 11 years and I don't recall ever seeing that Gold was an option. I also don't recall ever being subjected to this kind of ridicule due to being an alumnus of Marquette. I did not respond earlier as I wanted avoid an emotional reaction to the name and truly consider it. Unfortunately, the more I consider it, the more I dislike it and the more dismayed I am that the BOT thrust this name upon us. As I said, I don't recall Gold being an option. If the decision was that we could not be either the Golden Eagles or the Warriors, shouldn't we have some say in a new nickname? I'm amazed that schools and teams pick nicknames all the time with little if any fanfare, but somehow Marquette has managed to generate great controversy twice in 11 years. Marquette is now embarking on a great move forward by joining the Big East, but I have yet to find anyone that agrees that the nickname Gold should join us in this move. There are so many nicknames available if we do not want to be either Warriors or Golden Eagles. We could go back our roots with Hilltoppers or Golden Avalanche, or with respect to Pere Marquette go with Explorers or even Voyagers. The list is endless.
Please reconsider this nickname. I want to hold my head high in Madison Square Garden in March and I don't think that will be possible as the Gold. |
