The petition
We recognize that recycling plays an important role in maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment. As a higher education institution, it is important that the Morehouse School of Medicine provide a good example and have facilities for such a program. Recycling programs have many positive effects and outcomes:
1. Conservation of resources
• It is estimated that 3.2 tons of natural resources are consumed to produce 1 ton of virgin product.
• Each ton of paper recycled saves 60% of the energy, 95% of the air pollution, 17 trees and 7000 gallons of water, vs. virgin paper.
2. Conservation of energy
• By recycling or reducing at the source, a business can indirectly conserve energy. It is 98% more energy efficient to recycle an aluminum can than to make a can from virgin material.
3. Reduction of landfill spaces
• Landfill spaces are expensive and can be hazardous to residential communities in proximity.
4. Reduced operating expenses
• With less waste consumed and disposed of, operating expenses decrease.
With this in mind, we, the undersigned request that:
1. A committee is established to oversee the development of a recycling program at the Morehouse School of Medicine.
2. The Morehouse School of Medicine implements a continued recycling program.
3. The Morehouse School of Medicine administration fully support and help to sustain the mentioned recycling program.
