The petition

We the people of Memphis, TN are tired of the shackles of Northwest Airlines and their predatory pricing decisions for airfares. It is time that Memphis was set free. "Free to move about the country" just as residents of other metropolitan areas can.

We are tired of Northwest Airlines and their price gouging; we are tired of having to drive to Little Rock or Nashville for cheap fares and we are tired of the poor service we get from Northwest because we have absolutely no choice in air travel.

We call upon the Mayors or Memphis and Shelby County to intervene. We implore them to do the job they were elected to do, serve the people who elected them, and bring competition to Memphis. We also ask for intervention from the Federal Government (DOT, FTC, DOJ) to force competition and get us the low fares that were promised under the Airline Deregulation Act. We beg for more competition from Southwest Airlines, or from any low cost airline willing to compete against Northwest. We are sick and tired of paying $0.50-$1.00 per mile on every flight, every day no matter how far in advance we purchase the ticket or if we stay a saturday night. We have the demand but that demand is currently driving to LIT and BNA rather than pay the high prices from MEM. We don't need a $19 Skybus fare (although it would be nice) we need to pay a reasonable fare ($550 to Houston or New Orleans is not reasonable for a weekend trip and a cramped Regional Jet). We beg any airline to come and we will support you..! Tunica is promising Cheap fares but that airport terminal build is more than a year away. We need low fares now..!
