To those who call themselves the leaders of Arabs and Muslims:
Peace be with you, even as you have done nothing to uphold or enforce the rule of peace.
We, the undersigned, ask of the Arab and Muslim rulers, viz. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah of Jordan, President Mubarak of Egypt, and President Musharraf of Pakistan in particular, first to reflect on their names.
1. Have the two Abdullahs acted as God’s servants, or have they acted in the interest of wordly power and wordly powers? Has Mubarak been mubarak (a blessing) for Egypt, or a curse? Has Musharraf been honorable (musharraf) in his (in)action?
2. We ask of you, secondly, to undertake introspection (muhasiba) and tell us whether you are indeed men? Your cowardly inaction in the face of all the horrors of the recent weeks, months, and years make us suspect that you are indeed less than men. Not that you are women, for the woman is nurturing, self-sacrificial, and gracious. She takes care of and provides for the need of her family and her flock, all of which you have ceded to do.
3. We ask of you, thirdly, to tell us whether you are indeed humans. Has the indulgence of palace life left any ounce of humanity in you? You see the collective bloodshed of Muslims, the utter destruction of their lives and livelihood, yet you are not prompted to act in their defence.
4. We ask of you fourthly to tell us whether you are indeed Muslims? Do you not see the wholesale massacre of the Muslims, yesterday in Bosnia and Chechnya, today in Palestine and Lebanon, yet you dissociate yourself from the Muslim people and do act in their defence. The battle rages today, tomorrow is too late.
We further demand of you the following:
1. We demand of you to use all the weapons which Allah has given you, as trustees of the Muslims, to counter the American and Israeli oppression. These weapons are: Your faith, your wealth, your resources (including the oil weapon), and your military establishments. Do not think that we prefer to be butchered rather than to fight back.
2. We demand of you not to rely on Western powers and/or the United Nations when you can, if you had the insight, find in yourself the ability to counter oppression. Stop prostrating before Washington (the US) and New York (the UN). Be independent of external powers and stop the foolishness of thinking that others will stand up for your rights. Your qibla is unto Allah and you will be questioned by Him on the Final Day, just as you are questioned by us on this day.
3. We demand of you to either represent the Arab and Muslim people, or disappear from the scene. There are plenty of capable and honest people in our umma. We can do better. That is not the question. The question is with or without you?
4. Finally, we demand of you to relinquish tyranny in your societies, to open up for political participation of all sections of society, including the neglected majority, the neglected minorities, and women.
Finally, we ask from Allah only one thing:
To reform our rulers for the better... or to destroy them. |
