We, the members of the 'Lebanese for a Free and Independent Lebanon' organization, call on our Lebanese brothers, in the homeland and the diaspora, to unite in order to demand the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon. After three decades of Syria's control of Lebanon and its resources, we call on the United Nations and the Security Council to act in every way to implement Resolution 1559 which is the only hope to restore to Lebanon its sovereignty and independence.
We call on the United Nations and the Security Council not to be led astray by Syria's statments on its willingness to withdraw its forces from Lebanon since this is not guaranteed by timetables. We must learn from the mistakes of the past and not fall into a trap, such as the Ta'if Agreement, which Syria exploited for fifteen years as a pretext to avoid its obligations towards Lebanon and the international community and to force definite Syrian control over Lebanon. The conditions for ending Syrian presence in Lebanon have remained on paper. Without establishing an explicit timetable for a complete Syrian withdrawal, Syria will succeed also in evading Resolution 1559 and the historic opportunity to restore Lebanon's sovereignty to the Lebanese people will be lost.
We call on the international institutions to act to liberate Lebanon from the chains of agreements that were forced on it by Syria. The series of agreements between the countries that were signed since 1990's are a direct result of absolute Syrian control of Lebanon and perpetuate the exploitation of Lebanon's economy such as Syria's takeover of Lebanese electricity, following the gas pipeline project and the deprivation of Lebanon's natural right to control the Hajje River waters. The agreements are implemented unilaterally in Syria's favor in such a way that close to a billion US dollars are stolen from the Lebanese economy every year and transferred to Syria. The developed Lebanese economy is chained by the principles of Syria's archaic nationalization policies and has become a model of a failed economy.
Our vital interests can only be preserved by the existence of a free Lebanese government that will be formed after free parliamentary elections and a national parliament that will preserve these interests. Therefore, we call on the international institutions to act to esablish a Lebanese political system for free and fair political activity, in accordance with the Resolution 1559 which emphasizes the necessity for holding free elections according to the Lebanese constitution, without the intervention and influence of foreign elements.
We call on the United Nations and the Security Council to act to enforce Resolution 1559 more effectively and enable its implementation. We call on the Lebanese people, who look to the United Nations and Security Council institutions to realize its independence and its sovereignty, not to cease its political struggle until Resolution 1559 is completely implemented.
Millions of signatures added to this petition will express the power of the Lebanese determination for independence and will be an incentive for the international community to guarantee this independence. |
