A Petition to the Lamorinda Soccer Club Board of Directors

We, the Friends of LMSC, are committed to a soccer club that is democratic, accountable to its members and administered in the best interests of all participating children. We believe that:

* The LMSC has as its utmost purpose the development of youth soccer for the communities of Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda, both for current and future players.

* Governance of the LMSC should be on a representative basis, with transparent processes, input and communication between all LMSC constituents.

* The Club should be structured as a membership organization, with the parents as members. The Board of Directors should be elected by, representative of, and accountable to the member parents.

Friends of LMSC has examined the practices of Mustang Soccer League, Walnut Creek Soccer Club, Ballistic United Soccer Club, Diablo Valley Soccer Club and Bay Oaks Soccer Club. Links to these clubs are included under the Links section on this page. We believe that LMSC is unique among them in the following ways:

* Fee paying families are not "members" and therefore have no rights, voting or otherwise.

* The LMSC Board of Directors has sole authority to change its composition in any way. In other words, it elects itself and is not directly accountable to the members.

* The LMSC Board has substantially fewer Directors than these comparable clubs, preventing effective representation of the membership and the community.

Given this undemocratic structure, we request that the following actions be taken by the Board of Directors. These actions will modernize the structure of LMSC to be on par with other clubs:

1. Publicly solicit applications for the Board of Directors and elect to the Board a sufficient number to raise the Board level to at least 13 directors, as allowed by current LMSC bylaws. Criteria for Board qualification will be made public. Election of new directors will take place at a public meeting of the Board of Directors to be held no later than January 31, 2007.

2. Publicly commit to clearly defining LMSC membership and establishing democratic and accountable Board of Directors and administrative processes. This commitment should take the form of a Board of Director's resolution to be passed no later than January 31, 2007.

Petitioners request a response to these two action items in writing to the entire LMSC membership by December 17th by signing below.
