We, the undersigned, think that RLHS and Dean Sue’s decision to eliminate University-sponsored grilling is irresponsible, dangerous and inappropriate. Irresponsible because no one – except for the LDOC committee which hardly represents the entire student body – was consulted about this huge change to the LDOC culture. Dangerous because taking away food on a hot day when many are drinking and relegating drinking to the private, unregulated space of dorm rooms will most likely lead to even more dangerous behavior. Inappropriate because eliminating one’s food source is not a sensible response to the potential for irresponsible drinking.
People will be drinking on LDOC and most will be drinking responsibly. Taking away one of the main sources of community and camaraderie on that day – the ubiquitous BBQs – defies the entire purpose of Last Day as a Campus-wide celebration of achievement. The lack of grilling reduces conviviality but will not ensure sobriety because those who wish to have an alcoholic beverage will be relegated to unregulated private spaces, on and off-campus.
We, the undersigned of the Duke University community, implore you to reverse the RLHS decision to disallow groups from using the grills that are purchased with students’ rent money. We feel that this will be a severe blow to what is the most effective and positive part of an oftentimes-criticized event. Instead we ask that the student body be reminded that regulations and laws forbidding public drunkenness will be strictly enforced.
We, the undersigned, pledge that Duke University will have no reason to regret the reversal of this decision. We will behave responsibly, and will be accountable according to the Community Standard. We ask that you trust us to do so.

We truly believe that we, as students, are mature and accountable enough to deal with the irresponsible culture that has developed around LDOC. We are agents of change, and must start with ourselves. |
