A PETITION TO SOFTWARE MAKERS to meet the needs of modest-sized foodservice operations with an easy-to-use cross-platform software or online application featuring a triad of essential features: recipe organizing, recipe costing, and nutritional analysis.
There are full-featured kitchen software programs for large foodservice operations. Operations that can justify and afford systems that require entering every line item from every invoice paid by a department. And that software typically costs hundreds, in some cases thousands, of dollars.
There are a plethora of programs aimed at smaller foodservice operations. Many are written for both Windows and Macintosh, many are easy to learn and use, and most are affordably priced. But none of them offer the critical triad of features: recipe organizing, recipe costing, and nutritional analysis.
Even though MasterCook is not compatible with the latest Windows and Macintosh operating systems, none of the products since then do all three of MasterCook's critical functions well: recipe organizing, costing and nutirtional analysis.
That's why, years after software maker SierraHome ceased production and support for the product, so many people still use MasterCook. Many of the newer programs brag about having the ability to import from MasterCook and there are numerous online MasterCook user and discussion groups. MasterCook did the job of organzing and costing recipes very well, and accomplished nutritional analysis functions simply.
We, the many modest-sized foodservice operators who want to be more organized and successful in our costing and pricing systems, need a better answer than anything presently on the market.
We want a software product that:
• allows us to organize our recipes into multiple cookbooks
• allows us to cost out finished recipes by maintaining cost data by weight and volume for all ingredients
• allows us to nutritionally analyze recipes by reference to an editable database of ingredients
• allows us to export recipes and costing data to Excel.
• is not so focused on valuing current inventory that it requires the entry of every line from every invoice.
• is available to both Windows XP and Macintosh OS X users for less than $200.
