PETITION TO DISTRICT 111 SCHOOL BOARD
TO REINSTATE DAVID LEE
We, the undersigned, are parents, care-givers, taxpayers, residents, and citizens of the City of Burbank.
We agree that all the arts—music, dance, drama, visual arts, and literature—are vital to the proper education of our children. Maintaining and improving Arts education will enrich the lives of all as well providing a beneficial effect on a student's entire educational experience, including performance on the currently mandated standardized tests.
We regret the dismissal of Instructor David Lee on March 17, 2005. Despite the efforts of the federal government's No Child Left Behind program, which lists music alongside other core curriculums such as reading, math and science, music programs throughout the United States are suffering from budget cuts, lack of teachers and/or instruments or lack of emphasis from school administrators to improve music programs. District 111’s music program has fallen victim to such a budget cut as evidenced by the dismissal of our Director David Lee. The quality of the music training that made our bands such a source of community pride will be greatly diminished, leaving us with only two directors for nearly 310 students at seven different locations. Mr. Kayton and
Mr. Nykaza will be stretched so thin, adding the distinct possibility of “burn out”, which would be detrimental to our music program.
We urge this School Board to reinstate David Lee. According to the National Association for Music Education, it is essential to provide the curriculum, instrumentation, instruction and appropriate facilities for implementation of a quality music program. It is, unfortunately, an all-too-common occurrence to find a school district that has invested in one element, such as a great facility and/or the proper instrumentation without the all-important teacher training and staff support that enables the school's faculty to bring the equipment's potential value to bear on the students' potential for learning. Mr. Lee has proven himself a key element in the success of our District 111 Band Program, as evidenced by our Intermediate Band’s First Place performance at St. Lawrence this past March 12th. Mr. Lee’s upkeep of the Band Website is a valuable tool frequently used by parents and students alike. Thus,
Mr. Lee, Mr. Kayton, and Mr. Nykaza are all essential to the continued success of our program.
We pledge to support the efforts of elected and appointed officials to continually provide and maintain a quality music instruction program for all children in District 111. |
