Dear MEMBERS of MVP,
Last year the hours of access to the pool were shortened around the time school started and during this time working parents and others were denied key access early morning and after 6pm. The pool season then ended in early October and these afternoons and evenings were still blazing hot. We had to take our kids home rather than go to the pool. The last weeks of October are typically very warm so it would make sense to remain open until the end of the month.
Additionally, in the summer of 2004 the pool closed one week early without any input from the membership. We should not let this happen again. This year several members have already requested a week be added in October due to the late opening in April. The pool is open on Sundays until 7pm but closes on all other days at 6pm. Again, working parents or others are denied access to a water workout in the morning and in the evening.
Key access should be considered as an option to facilitate extending the hours. Other than an occasional member leaving the gate open, key access has not been an issue in the past. Members can be educated about the liability in leaving the gate open during key access hours.
The inability to staff the pool with lifeguards can be solved. Securing the services of lifeguards is not an issue (look at Craig's list!) for other neighborhood pools so why is it an issue at MVP? In fact, many parents have offered to obtain their Red Cross training to mitigate any arguments about lack of lifeguards.
Without violating local ordinances the pool can be open for 365 days a year and can remain open until 10pm, so a request to extend the season and hours is not unreasonable and is within policy.
During each evening this week (5/1/06) there were many families still at the pool when it closed and the temperatures were in the high 70s.
We are requesting that the Board of MVP listen to the needs of the members and extend the daily hours of operation of the pool and also, extend the season to at least the end of October. |
