To Hans Kellner, Chair
Award Selection Committee
English Department
NC State University
As graduate students (current and former) of Dr. Steven B. Katz, we strongly believe he deserves this year’s Alumni Association Distinguished Graduate Professorship Award. By virtue of his unique and effective approach to teaching, Dr. Katz brings great credit to himself, to the English Department, and to the university.
Dr. Katz brings life to the classroom. He spends long hours with students outside of class—discussing assignments to ensure students understand, helping tailor assignments to students' interests, and guiding students in revisions until the work meets his unswerving academic standards.
His enthusiasm for and dedication to teaching inspired us to pursue a wide variety of professional and academic achievements: publications, doctoral degrees, career advancement, scholarships, awards, and other honors. The theories and analytical tools and techniques we learned from Dr. Katz—and the confidence we gained from him in applying them—were key to all these achievements. Many of us continue to rely on his enthusiasm for and expertise in rhetoric and poetry in our professional lives.
It is rare indeed to find an experienced professor who's still excited about his topic, who is willing to spend so much time with his students each and every semester, and who is so effective in teaching both theory and application.
We strongly encourage your committee to nominate Dr. Katz for this much-deserved and long-overdue recognition. |
