The petition
As reported on CTV Newsnet, CBC Newsworld, and the Calgary Sun, a Grade 11 Student suffering from Degerative Muscular Dystrophy is not allowed to bring his service dog to school.
Cooper James and his family have been fighting with the Calgary Board of Education to allow Cooper to bring his service dog to school, but the board keeps dragging its heels.
The service dog is used to help disabled child perform basic independent living skills other people take for granted. Without his service dog, Cooper James will have to depend on others for basic habitual skills, robbing him of indepedence and possible employability.
However, the Calgary Board of Education has banned Cooper James, the disabled boy in this issue, from taking his service dog, Kodak, to school for unjustifyable reasons.
Due to this ban, Cooper is unable to attend classes, and his family has even taken the Calgary Board of Education to the Alberta Human Rights Commission.
However, because Human Rights Commissions can take between 2 and 5 years to get a case heard, this issue will not be resolved soon. Furthermore, Cooper cannot wait this long.
To learn more about how get the Calgary Board of Education and Alberta Government to allow Cooper James to bring his service dog to school, visit my website at http://www.jackiebarrett.ca/Ju... It'll contain e-mail links to targeted parties.
Let's show an oil rich and so-called egalitarian province like Alberta disabled persons have rights to independence regardless of age and location, including schools and learning institutions.
