In light of all the justifiable, but negative media that department is now sustaining, more investigation and probing into that department's practices in dealing with race relations and gender biases are long overdue. I learned early on as an officer in one of the toughest zones there (Zone 3)that an African-American officer was not given discretion in locking up all those who violated the law. I served my time honorably with that department, I led the watch in the number of dispatched calls answered and physical arrests on more than one occasion. I was promoted quickly and given plenty of opportunity for specialized training. I too was loved and appreciated by others "who look like me" in the community because I understood their struggle. Unfortunately, I attempted to lock up the wrong person one night, a business owner, of Asian descent, who was clearly guilty of simple assault against some African-American juveniles. While effecting the arrest, the neighborhood on-lookers cheered me on finally appreciative that something was being done about an on-going problem. Yet, the business owner never served a day in jail. I was scandalized, stereotyped against, and "barred" from re-employment after completing military active duty service. No attorney would take my case in the local area. In spite of stellar evaluations and several character witnesses, including those of Asian descent willing to speak on my behalf that I was not a racist. Pennington and Frankling turned a deaf ear. However, I did not lose, I moved on and now working at the federal level. Yet, my heart aches at the fact, as I learn almost a year later...after making contact with the juveniles mother...that the boys were sent to jail instead. I checked with the juvenile court and the boys had no priors. They served time simply because some "dirty" cops wanted to prove a point against me. |
