The petition

Dear Congressman Walter Jones, 3rd District North Carolina,

General Karl Eikenberry, former commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, said in congressional testimony in Feb. 2007, about the war in Afghanistan: "In a campaign such as this, the construction of roads and infrastructure can be just as decisive as military actions."

General Eikenberry also said:"Economic development in the region will be key to thwarting the insurgency, as much of the enemy force is drawn from the ranks of unemployed men looking for wages to support their families."

We are families, friends, and supporters of our troops in Afghanistan, and we are determined that the politicians do their jobs the same as our troops are doing theirs. We demand the U.S. Congress appropriate an adequate amount, $7 billion, in an emergency appropriation to be effective immediately, to address the conditions General Eikenberry was referring to, which only makes the jobs of our soldiers that much harder.

We demand a political offensive as aggressive and effective as the work our troops are doing on the ground, which means jobs for young Afghan men to deprive the Taliban of recruits, who by all accounts are joining only because they need the $8 per day which the Taliban pays its recruits. We demand the congress and the president sponsor and pass a plan which follows the one outline in detail at the website Jobs for Afghans JobsForAfghans.org
