City of Jacksonville Dumping of Deceased Animals

We, the Undersigned, formally petition the City of Jacksonville, Florida to immediately end the long-standing practice of disposing of unwanted / euthanized and otherwise deceased animals from it’s Animal Care and Control facilities into the City’s landfills. For as many as three decades, if not longer, the City has maintained this unethical practice despite the fact that many other economical and environmentally sound solutions such as cremation have been presented to the present and former City Council and Directors of Animal Care and Control on numerous occasions.

1. The practice of disposal of deceased animals into the City’s landfills presents an obvious health hazard to citizens living near the landfills if they (the deceased) should go uncovered for any length of time.

2. The practice of disposal of deceased animals into the City’s landfills presents an immediate threat to the health of the City and non-City employees that work in and around these landfills.

3. The practice poses a potential health hazard to future citizens residing on or near these landfills as it is a common practice for the City, once the landfills are no longer usable, to sell and/or develop the properties. In many cases, former landfill sites throughout the City of Jacksonville are now housing developments, City parks, public and private schools, and many other residential, commercial, and governmental used facilities.

4. The practice, in and of itself, is unethical. Ordinances within the City of Jacksonville are written so that animals (pets) are regarded as property, no different from a house, automobile, home appliance, etc. However, irregardless of the status of these animals (whether unwanted, injured, sick, behavioral problem, or deceased prior to Animal Care and Control gaining custody) they deserve much more respect than to be dumped into the City’s landfills like common household trash.

We, the Undersigned, further petition the City of Jacksonville, Florida to fund a more economical and environmentally sound method of disposal of it’s deceased animals in the form of an incinerator or crematorium. Such disposal methods should be added to it’s existing animal control facilities at 2580 First Street West and/or at it’s new (yet to be constructed) facilities in the Interstate 95 / Interstate 10 merger area.
