55 Scott Schaeffer-Duffy, Saints Francis and Therese Catholic WorkerOur community has long sought a powerful way to prayerfully, humbly, and, at the same time, forcefully respond to the ongoing evil of the war, occupation, and torture. We are grateful for this campaign and hope to see it through until Holy Week when we plan to risk arrest for nonviolent civil disobedience at the Federal Building near our Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Worcester, MA.

66 Joseph W. StrychaszPope John Paul II prior to the invasion of Iraq sent to President Bush his own emissary to inform the President that in no way could the Pope morally justify a premptive strike against Iraq. Our president did not listen to the Pope. As a result many American soldiers and innocent Iraqi citizens died. Colin Powell, former secretary of State, was against our invasion of Iraq. A recent report from one of the FBI agents who interrogated Saddam Hussein reported he had no weapons of mass destruction and attempted to bluff the US. His main concern was that of Iran so he deceived us by saying he had weapons of mass destruction. The real fight against terrorism is taking place in Afghanistan where Al Queda and the Taliban are on the rise. A true way to peace is to establish justice as Pope Paul VI told the UN that you cannot have peace without justice. This is the reason why wars occur, viz., people do not share in the wealth of either their nation or others.
67 Tom JacksonAs a Quaker and peace activist, I was deeply moved the first time I heard of Franz Jagerstatter, his faith, commitment, courage to speak truth to power, and his profound discernment. I hope that many more people will hear his story and be inspired.

71 phoebe knopfthe overwhelming violence our nation has unleashed and continues to unleash against countless innocent iraqi civilians needs to be faced by all of us u.s. citizens who consider ourselves faith-based, so that together we can repent and help usher in the reign of god's peace, the violence of our government makes us all sick, in the same way that the alcoholism of one family member adversely affects the health of the entire fanily system. yet jesus has promised to heal us and forgive us if only we will risk asking him for the help we need. have mercy on us, lord. forgive us for our sick silences in the face of the torture and killing of so many of our brothers and sisters in iraq. heal our souls and make us instruments of your beautiful peace, that together we might end this war, make reparations to iraq and build a world beyond war. amen.
72 Catherine PfeifferI pray that all the Church will ,with God's grace, join Pope John Paul 2nd in taking a firm stand against all war.

80 Marlin Elbon KilpatrickIf Jesus the Christ commanded his disciples to love enemies as he loved them - even on a cross - then why are today's Christians participating in the killing of enemies? John L. McKenzie, the late Catholic theologian and biblical scholar, stated the love of enemies is the clearest of Jesus' teachings. Jesus, the Suffering Servant of God, calls all his followers to participate in solidarity with His cross by taking up their crosses and follow Him in the nonviolent love of friends and enemies. His Way is the salvation of the world. Why are bishops endorsing military chaplains and blessing the militaries of this world? This is questionable behavior in light of the clearest of Jesus' teaching. Elbon Kilpatrick Converted Protestant minister to the Catholic Church at Easter Vigil 2005 Jackson, Tennessee

90 Raph MartinEver since reading Gordon Zahn's book on Franz years ago and teaching my students about his life, my belief has been that Franz is a model to be imitated. Young people need to hear his message about conscientious objection to war and the following of an informed conscience. Our faith communities have been silent on these issues and it is about time laity and clergy are taking the lead and promoting this vision for the future of the Church and of humanity as well! I wholeheartedly support this petition and encourage others to consider committing to it as well.
