The petition
International Paper (IP) plans to conduct a test burn of tire-derived fuel (TDF) in order to reduce the energy costs in it's Ticonderoga, NY paper mill. The NY Department of Conservation (NYDEC) approved a permit to allow this test burn to happen.
Starting November 6, 2006 IP plans on performing the test burn of TDF without the appropriate Electrostatic Percipitator (ESP) device installed first. Most of IP's paper mills have them, but the Ticonderoga mill is older and only has a wet scrubber. ESPs are considered standard pollution control measures when burning TDF.
IP has a two week test burn that will allow them to burn up to 72 tons of tire chips per day.
IP is interested in burning TDF to save between $1 million and $2 million in energy costs per year.
IP wants to perform this test burn to see if they need to install the $8 million ESP.
IP's Ticonderoga paper mill employs 650 to 700 workers and is the largest employer in the region.
If the company can not save money on this older paper mill, it is speculated that the mill will close and have a negative impact on the local economy.
There will be no turning back once the TDF pollutants are in the air.
Please help us stop International Papers test tire burn and require International Paper install an Electrostatic Percipitator for the health and saftey of the residents of Vermont and New York.
