The petition
I first became concerned about the issue of flu pandemics while teaching American History survey classes and learned that more people were killed in World War I by the Spanish Flu than by the war. This concern was heightened with the information forthcoming in the past few years concerning H5N1 and the possibility of this virus mutating into a deadly and contagious form. For over a year I have been following events concerning this issue and am convinced that at some time in the near future, we will experience another deadly pandemic. I am equally convinced that Americans, particularly families with children, are nowhere near prepared enough to deal with the consequences of such an event. This petition will be sent to the Honorable Tom Harkin, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Appropriations, and to the other Subcommittee members. I hope to have enough signatures to send this petition by December 1, 2007.
