Protect Idaho's Roadless Areas

We, the undersigned, strongly support the complete protection of all inventoried and uninventoried roadless areas in the state of Idaho.

Idaho has more roadless country than any of the other contiguous 48 states. Central Idaho is home to the largest contiguous ecosystem complex in the lower 48, the Big Wild. To protect the diverse wildlife that thrives here, to ensure water quality for our threatened fish species, and to preserve the inherent quality of life we enjoy due to these wild places, we ask the appropriate government officials to fully protect all roadless areas in the state.

On May 5, 2005 the Roadless Area Conservation Rule was repealed by the Bush adminstration. In its orginal form this rule prohibited most road-building and development on 58.5 million acres of National Forests, including 9 million acres in Idaho. More than 2.5 million people voiced their support for the orignial Roadless Rule, which in its current form now gives state governors the option of petitioning the Forest Service for roadless protection.

Friends of the Clearwater, a recognized non-profit organization since 1987, defends the Idaho Clearwater Bioregion's wildlands and biodiversity through a Forest Watch program, litigation, grassroots public involvement, outreach, and education.

The Wild Clearwater Country, the northern half of central Idaho's Big Wild, contains many unprotected roadless areas and wild rivers, and provides crucial habitat for countless rare plant and animal species. Friends of the Clearwater strives to protect these areas, restore degraded habitats, preserve viable populations of native species, recognize national and international wildlife corridors, and to bring an end to commodity extraction and industrialization on our public lands.
