If there were a giant Star of David or a Christian cross, it would be a safe assumption that most, if not all, of the people who are petitioning the crescent would instead be showing nothing but praise for the design.
The real, and *truly American* opposition to the design should be that it bears strong resemblance to *a* religious symbol, not that it resembles a religious symbol specific to Islam.
The United States of America was founded upon several core ideas, philosophies, and concepts that any American needs to *fully* believe in and support to be truly patriotic. One of these core concepts is the separation of church and state.
We should petition to have the design of this memorial changed to not include a symbol of Islamic religion. However, we should be petitioning against the inclusion of *any* religious symbol, not because it is an *Islamic* symbol.
In short, this petition is fighting for a good cause, but is fighting for all of the wrong reasons. |
