The president stated in his inaugural address:
"America's influence is not unlimited, but fortunately for the oppressed, America's influence is considerable, and we will use it confidently in freedom's cause... All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors."
Yet, right now in Darfur, the president has not lived up to these bold words. Up to 300,000 men, women, and children have been slaughtered by their own government, and that number rises by up to 10,000 each month. This is genocide, plain and simple, though the U.N. has still failed to call it so. What can we do to stop these atrocities? Indignation! Senator Paul Simon said after the Rwandan genocide, "If every member of the House and Senate had received 100 letters from people back home saying we have to do something about Rwanda, when the crisis was first developing, then I think the response would have been different."
Yet, we weren't outraged by Rwanda. In the recent movie about the genocide, we were shown the product of our inaction. As one reporter in the movie said after Paul thanks him for shooting footage of the genocide,"I think if people see this footage, they'll say Oh, my God, that's horrible. And then they'll go on eating their dinners."
Don't let those people be you. We can learn from the mistakes of the past. We can make a difference this time. You can help bring an end to these horrific human rights violations. This petition will be sent to everyone and anyone that might rally for the cause. It only takes a few minutes to complete this petition, yet the results could potentially save the lives of innocent people. So, please sign this petition. Help save darfur! |
