The petition

We understand that the University of Washington has decided to discontinue its swim team program, and we are very concerned that this endangers the continued availability of Hec Edmundson Pavilion Pool for other users.

The Hec Ed Pool is a very valuable asset, not only for the University, but for the community at large. In the Northwest there are already too few pools. Seattle provides only 1.7 pools per 100,000 citizens, far below the national average of 3.0 pools per 100,000 citizens for large U.S. cities (Trust for Public Lands, 2006).

The Hec Ed Pool is used by many organizations that continually struggle to find venues for their aquatic activities. For example, the UW Club Water Polo Teams and the Huskies Masters Swim Team depend on use of the Pool for their very existence. The Pool is also used by high schools for meets and should remain available even if the UW swim program ends.

The undersigned individuals respectfully request that the University of Washington continue to maintain and keep the Hec Edmundson Pool available for use.

Thank you.
