We, the undersigned, oppose the recommendation of the San Carlos Parks and Recreation Commission to install synthetic turf and lights at Heather Elementary School.
We support youth sports and applaud the City Council’s desire to provide attractive and functional recreational facilities for the community. However, the following points deserve careful consideration:
Transformation of a neighborhood elementary school into a sports complex with the capacity for athletic events from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, 365 days per year.
Placement of artificial field lights on one of the most prominent plateaus in San Carlos, resulting in evening light pollution throughout a large line-of-sight area.
A full-sized synthetic soccer field with lighting for late evening play, more suited for adults and teenagers, not elementary school children.
The addition of synthetic grass and lighting at Heather School is expected to add 2111 additional hours of use per year, with the resulting increase in noise and traffic congestion on nearby neighborhood streets.
The permanent decrease in home values, due to the loss of evening views, increased noise and increased traffic.
The project will consume a significant portion of Measure G citywide park funds, not meet current youth sport field needs and will generate a known deficit.
We urge you not to approve the Park and Recreation Commission recommendation for adding synthetic turf and lighting at Heather School until a comprehensive and creative assessment of alternatives has been completed. |
