Unintended pregnancies cost the state of Iowa $47 million a year, because we spend nothing to prevent them.

Without adequate funding for sex education and contraception, Iowa is falling behind its neighbors. The state of Minnesota has had a state program in place since 1978 and currently has the fifth lowest teen pregnancy rate in the U.S..  Iowa’s leaders could learn from Minnesota’s example.

Healthy Families FACTS:

F     For every $1 spent on pregnancy prevention to low-income women, Iowa would save $4 on what it would otherwise have to spend on unintended pregnancies.

F     Iowa ranks 48th in the country in availability of contraceptives, and ranks 43rd in funding for family planning services.

F     There are nearly 170,000 women in Iowa who cannot afford the contraceptives they need, and providing them is proven to reduce unintended pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Unintended pregnancies are a problem. Education is the solution.
