We don't need another attack on our cities like 9/11. We have to stop Jihad. |

highest level of support to the Gulf War veterans in
determining the effects of their exposures to toxins
and the care they need to overcome their illnesses
or support their highest level of functioning. They fought when our country asked them to and now our country needs to fulfill its contract with them and provide for their health needs. |

| 223 | Danny Ingram | I am ashamed of the United States Government. What ever happened to being proud Americans (United States), united we stand divided we fall? I guess that went out when the huge machine of capitalism started devouring our country and wealthier citizens. |
| 224 | Elizabeth Croughwell | I am a gulf war veteran and am aflicted with the gulf war syndrome. Oh my sorry, the USA is the only country in the UN forces that doesn't recognize this to be a true affliction presipitated from the the Gulf War. |

| 226 | JUDY RAMSEY | It is beyond me to understand why our veterans are not treated with the respect they have earned. All veterans, regardless of when or where they were deployed should receive the best medical care possible. They shouldn't even have to ask for it, nor should they have to go through miles of red tape, it should be provided to them regardless of the cost. A veterans medical bill has been paid for in advance. |
| 227 | Kinda Stanley | Let's give these veterans what they deserve and NOW! |
| 228 | Linda Stanley | Without the troops and veterans there would be no America. It is long past time that we treated them adequately, effectively, aggresively and as immediately as possible. |

Same $hit Different War
An Open letter to Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans from a Vietnam Vet
I’m glad you made it back alive. Let’s try to keep it that way. Like me, God only knows what you were exposed to and how many of you will eventually die from it. The latest fiasco at Walter Reed got me to thinking the 'cost of war' has never adequately covered the cost of rehabilitating war-torn veterans. My purpose in writing this is to discuss that ‘inconvenient truth.’
I work with a veterans group, HCVets.com. Our research shows only one pension was denied after the Revolutionary War. After the Civil War, thousands of pensions were denied with the main reason being ‘lost records.’ Civil War veterans with double amputations reportedly received $8 in monthly compensation; roughly enough to cover half a month’s average rent. Most of these veterans couldn’t work because most jobs were still manual labor. Then came the infamous "bonus army" march on DC after WW1; crushed by the active duty Army with tanks and machine guns. Thousands of WW2 veterans were also screwed out of fair pensions, exploited by their desire to get back home. Then came the “atomic testing vets,” Korea and Vietnam. In Vietnam, about 58 thousand US troops died. Some estimates say nearly as many veterans committed suicide since then. By the time HCV, Agent Orange and PTSD take their toll, at least 10 times more Vietnam-era veterans will eventually die at this pace. So, naturally, we wonder what the death toll and causes thereof will be for the “war on terrorism” in the Middle East.
Back to Walter Reed: The holes in the walls, discolored mold blotches behind wallpaper and similar problems in Building 18 remind me of what my liver probably looks like. I have advanced cirrhosis due to Hepatitis C (HCV). Presently, there is no cure or vaccine for HCV.
To get an idea of what cirrhosis looks like, go to http://images.google.com/ and type it in. God only knows for sure how I got HCV. It could have been the many "jet gun" immunizations, medical operations I had or performed or maybe just a bad haircut in some crappy third-world barbershop. I'm relatively lucky though. I was fortunate enough (so far) to beat the odds since I finally “cleared” after two years of chemotherapy. So now, my lab tests show I’m in remission HCV, but I’m left with numerous lifelong complications including Stage III cirrhosis, chronic fatigue, diabetes, cognitive/memory issues, , etc.
Whatever the cause, I blame the military and VA. I never received a separation physical; despite being stationed in a country where Hepatitis of various types was and still is epidemic. By-the-way, Hepatitis can be spread from mother to child. My wife’s mother, my wife and my children all test positive for HCB; but not me. Anyway, that’s another story. Back on topic: After the Agent Orange lawsuit, the VA got Congressional funding to test for Hepatitis C. But the VA only tested “at-risk” vets already in their system. The VA never even attempted to notify any vets who may have been exposed but weren't experiencing any serious outward manifestations of HCV. When you begin really feeling sick, major damage liver has already been done by HCV. That's why it’s called the “silent killer."
Hepatitis is also widespread in the Middle East; especially among the locals. While our present military generally receives wonderful care while on active duty, it’s beginning to look like lives lost after returning home may, once again, overtake lives lost in battle. That seems to be a reoccurring theme with the VA bureaucracy and politicians who care about appearing concerned but are mainly just concerned about getting re-elected. The bottom line is that VA funding needs to be both adequate and non-discretionary. Right now, veteran health care remains discretional and not an entitlement. So it continues to lag behind the pork barrel status quo and way too little gets down to the vets. Like I said; same $hit, different war
Sincerely yours
Mark

| 244 | Anonymous | The Military promised our Veterans they would be taken care of, now it is time the US is held to that promise. Our Veterans have come back wounded both physcially and mentally, broken in many ways, and we need to give them our support for fighting this war for us. |
