The petition

Tampons, pads and liners attracted no taxes in Australia since 1948 until 2000. Since GST we an additional 10% on these products.

As half of the Australian population experience menstruation for 30-40 years of their life through no choice of their own, these products have a good argument to be included in the GST-free list. According to A C Nielsen data 1999, $202.1 million was spent on women's menstrual products for that year. Based on this figure, the GST will raise $20.21 million a year because women menstruate.

The Tax Department can remove GST if the Health Minister advises that there is a case for them to be included in the GST free list.

It is our position that tampons and condoms are essential items. This petition will be presented to the health minister once it has reached our huge goal of 100 000 signatures. This is a simple issue. We can do this!
