This petition is open to ALL doctors and will be sent to PMETB Chief Executive, Department of Health and British Medical Association
PMETB (Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board) took over responsibility for certification of specialist (including GP) training from September 2005. Prior to this, there was no charge from the JCPTGP. From September 2005 this responsibility shifted to PMETB, and the RCGP 'Certification Unit'. For those on a straightforward VTS, the fee now became £350 to the RCGP and £250 to PMETB.
Over the Christmas period, PMETB held a 'consultation' about increasing their element of the fee to £750, making a total of £1100 when combined with the costs of the RCGP fee. This increase is based on 'guestimates'. The PMETB has been operational for a short time only, and has no track record, no evaluation of performance, and no clear line of accountability.
WE PROPOSE A BOYCOTT OF FEES UNTIL THERE HAS BEEN AN INDEPENDENT REVIEW INTO FUNDING OF THIS BODY, INCLUDING ASSESSMENT REGARDING THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GOVERNMENT TO BEAR A PROPORTION OF THE COST, AS BENEFICIARIES OF THE SCHEME.
**Update: The PMETB response to the consultation has been to reduce the standard certification increase to £500 instead of £750. However, this does little to help the applicants under Article 11/14, who will continue to be victims of even greater rises. Keeping the pressure on PMETB will result in further positive outcomes. |
