There is a serious social problem which is gripping nations across the world. It kills two million people worldwide every year which is more than double the number of people killed by war, and more than the number of people killed by drugs and alcohol combined. The stress caused by this social ill in the long term is worse for your heart than gaining 40lbs or ageing 30 years. We are talking here about Work.
Worse still, we are working more than ever and many of us are doing it for free. Working hours have risen in the last 20 years for full time UK workers which reverses a 150 year trend and each year UK workers give £23billion in free labour to their bosses due to unpaid overtime.
Ahh you say, but work helps to keep people in money and out of poverty. This is wrong too. The number of people in work is at "record levels" according to the UK government. Meanwhile, official UK figures show 22% of people living in poverty, compared to 13% in 1979. Also, in the 1970s and 1980s, around 4% of low-paid employees lived in poverty. Currently, 14% of low-paid employees live in poverty. (5% of all employees now live in poverty). So work doesn't help the poor either.
Imagine a world where by law, the maximum number of 8 hour days you must work is 4. Employers must keep you on the same amount of money you would have got for five days, and, horror of horrors, use the huge profits they make at your expense to pay for this.
When you are old it is guaranteed that you will not look back on your life and be grateful that you spent so much time working. It is guaranteed that you will look back and wish you had spent more time with your family and friends, that you went for that walk in the park with that guy/girl you liked, that you spent more boozy afternoons in the pub, or had more wild nights at clubs. You will wish you had seen more of the world, tasted different foods, laughed more with friends, learned to play an instrument, got to know your father better, and played more games with your kids.
These are things that life is all about. It is not about spending the majority of your waking hours feeling miserable doing something that is bad for you to earn profit for somebody else. The only people who benefit in the long run from you working long and hard are the CEOs who go to two meetings per week and watch the cash pile up.
Reclaim your life back, and start really living. Sign our petition for a four day working week which we will send to 10 Downing Street as soon as we get a significant number of signatures to make it worthwhile. Love, dream and live, work less and play more. |
