For the past twenty years, Fordham Athletics has sunk to the depths of mediocrity and disarray. The majority of the sports programs at Fordham have had losing records for a number of years now. Combine this fact with a number of past disasterous decisions made on the part of the Athletic Administration and it is clear why Fordham Athletics has been tossed off of the national college sports scene.
A university such as Fordham with a rich sports history should not tolerate such ridicule and overall mediocrity. Yet, the Fordham administration has deemed it fit to allow Fordham Athletics to muddle in obscurity. Such complacency should not be accepted by students, alumni, and friends of Fordham. In order for Fordham to become the premier Catholic university in America, drastic changes must be made in the Athletic Administration. For example, a new Athletic Director is needed to adaquately handle the complexities facing a nationally recognized athletic department. In addition, a commitment must be made to dramtically enhance athletic facilities which is crucial to achieving success on a national level.
With the revival of the Fordham men's basketball team under the passionate leadership of Coach Whittenburg, now is the time to build off of this momenentum. Students and alumni are excited once again to support this team. It is time for the Administration to show its support by making the changes necessary to ensure that Fordham Athletics can once again succeed at a national level.
This petition will be delivered to President McShane's office once it has generated the substantial support we know is possible.
