Motion picture production is an extremely attractive business. Even small productions may employ hundreds of people. While actors grab the spotlight, the bulk of the job creation is below-the-line. A production's spending creates additional jobs, generates local and state taxes and stimulates the local economy. In fact, many states, provinces, and even countries have been actively luring U.S. production companies with a range of tax breaks and other incentives.
The stakes for California are substantial. Motion picture production sustains employment for thousands of people throughout the state. While the entertainment industry has deep roots here, the economic engine which drives its employment base has begun to leave the state one project at a time. Indeed, each time a film leaves the state it acts as a de facto training program for more local workers somewhere else, making it more attractive for the next production.
The time has come for Californians to fight this economic threat head-on. This petition will be mailed (in snail and e format) to our state legislators by January 31, 2006. If you support the effort to keep film production in our state, please add your signature below. |
