The decision by the Filipino American Heritage Institute (FAHI), administrators of the Filipino American Library of Los Angeles (formerly called the Pilipino American Reading Room and Library or PARRAL) to parcel and thereby essentially destroy the collection has mystified, confused, and angered the community. Helen Brown selflessly presented this wonderful gift to the Filipino Community of Los Angeles and now, not only has it been broken up - its heart and rare volumes donated to the UCLA Asian American Studies Center - it has been rendered but a shell of its former self. A prime repository of culture and identity has been ripped out of the community and dispersed.
The incomprehensible nature of this decision is reinforced by the fact that the mission statement of FAHI and its extremely successful fund raising activities are based on its supposed commitment to the library and its place in the community. We can only imagine why these actions have been taken because no forthright explanation has been given by FAHI and a true dialogue with the community has been avoided.
We demand that the full PARRAL collection be returned to Historic Filipinotown to be accessible to everyone as source materials for leisure and research.
The undersigned demand that the Filipino American Library of Los Angeles/ The Helen Brown Collection be reunited, kept intact and undivided within the community that it was dedicated to serve in Historic Filipinotown. |
