Dear Mr. Hicks,
In the schools in this district, students have been eating expired foods without out even noticing it. A majority of the school's food has past its expiration date, and yet it still remains available for students to buy. Just today, I bought a cereal bar, a bag of chips, and ice cream, and a juice, all of which were past their expiration date, the farthest dating back to august 2006. Last week I had a strawberry fruit cup, which expired and June of last year. Is it a danger for students to be eating foods so far past their expiration date? Students should at least be aware that their food is expired. Most students don't care to look at the date.
If the school's budget does not even allow for them to buy food for the cafeteria, then they should not be feeding students. The district should have enough money, considering high taxes, high user fees for school activities, and none of that money seeming to be spent on fixing the roads.
Expiration dates are put on foods for a reason. They are not just slapped on there without a thought. Food is stamped to let you know that after that date, the food will no longer be as high of quality, or may not be safe to eat. Therefore, the food should either not be sold or students should know that their food may be unhealthy.
