Scott F. KolvekI have been very displeased with the overall education of my daughter. She rarely if ever gets assigned homework and the concept of children working in groups/teams during class time to learn math is alarming (to say the least). I will be happy to also show up and support you in your efforts. (not just in the math area). Scott F. Kolvek, PE, MBA, MIS

Sheryl AndrusI think the programed needs to be reviewed. I like some aspects of the program but not all. I also think that SCIENCE should NOT be a quint in the LVMS It should be taught all year, it is as important as Math and Language Arts. Please review this too. It got pushed through last Spring w/out input from parents.

Leta DavisI am currently paying for a Math tutor for my 2nd grade son. He loves math and the Everyday Math program does not give him what he needs to excel. Also the EM program does not have material for teachers to provide work for those children who are a grade or two ahead in Math.
George MoranI can't help my own kid with their home work. What is the point of changing from the traditional way of teaching math to this new math?

Steven GluckI grew up in town and graduated West Morris Central ('83). I thought the school system and especially the High School did an excellent job of preparing me for college and ultimately an Electrical Engineering degree from Lehigh. I now have a 6 year old son about to start 1st grade and have similar concerns about an alternative math program. I really believe that the fundamentals of mathematics are crucial and that a traditional building block process with repetition sans calculators is really needed to provide the proper educational foundation for future numerical success no matter your chosen career path. While I no longer worry about the area under the curves in calculus anymore … it is the process and the discipline that it takes to learn and execute these concepts that is important and I still lean heavily on these skills and training today. Thank you for all of your efforts, Steve Gluck
AnonymousWe lived in a district with everyday math. My daughter scored very low on the standardized test in math in the 3rd grade. In 4th grade she was traumatized by the math program. I finally told her it did not matter what the teacher said (my grandmother, my mother, my father, and two aunts were teachers. I majored in education and have always supported the classroom teacher and was taught that education was a respected profession). I enrolled my daughter in KUMON so she could learn the fundamentals of math. I did not care about report card grades. After 15 months of KUMON, the same standardized test was given again. Imagine my surprize when my daughter scored over 90%. My concern was that she learn math--I was not doing KUMOM for higher test scores or grades. Her scores on the language portions of the same test were over 95%. in both 3rd and 5th grade. Her reading scores were high enough for the Johns Hopkins gifted and talented summer programs. I know I should go look for the paperwork to give you the exact scores. Maybe I will. I have shared this info at one of the BOE meetings in Long Valley several years back. I do not understand why--the schools cannot offer two types of math. Let the parents choose. I complained to the school board where we had lived prior to moving to Long Valley (Vernon) about the math program. It was on a teacher appreciation night and there were scores of teachers in attendance. The next day, the 8th grade chemistry teacher thanked me, because she said the kids could not do simple equations. The 6th grade history teacher-he had students in high school- told us on back to school night--to be sure that we made our children memorize the multiplication tables. He knew the kids were not being drilled as we were when we were kids. I could keep going- if you have questions - just ask. Oy- my daughter now works at KUMON in Chester- and she says lots of parents complain about the everyday math. PS I think teachers are afraid to give the sheets of homework that we once had. 118 Elizabeth HrehaIt is no small wonder that the USA is behind in Math Skills in comparison to the rest of the world. It is totally frustrating for my son. He is a smart enough child but he is not learning the math skills he needs to succeed in life.
Michael HallI hate this Everyday Math. I will go along with Everyday Math, when you show me Everyday Algebra, Everyday Quant., Everyday Stats etc.
Wendy Jani would definitely like to see connected math to be removed from the cirriculum
Yeong-Long JanFrom the feedback from my child and reviewing\testing her math work with her, I feel Everyday math is clearly dumbing down the students and further disheartening the children who are looking forward to more challenging work. The high school graduation requirements from this weekend of the Corzine administrations is clearly showing the schools are not doing enough. It does not push further than I would like, but it's a start.
AnonymousI do not understand when students take NJASK TESTS, are they doing math traditional way or everydaymath/connected math?? I am against for Everydaymath and connected math

Donald PalumboAfter spending time reviewing my son's math homework (he is in the third grade), I am appalled by the curriculum that he is being subjected to - I cannot understand the point of changing the way that our children are 'learning' math from the methods that all of us used when we were learning math, methods which by the way have held us in good stead for hundreds of years. I will be spending much of this summer with my son, teaching him the correct methods for adding, multiplying and dividing, and drilling him on such basics as the multiplication tables, as I am extremely concerned that his grades will suffer drastically when he moves along to higher grades (where 'Everyday Math' is not part of the curriculum).

Susan TagliaferroHow can a parent help with homework when this is foriegn to us? My child is learning disabled and this program has only disabled him more not enabled him.

Scott P. HallI have concerns about "Everyday Math" and do feel the Board of Education should revisit this matter

Carolyn IlnickiI'm not thrilled with the program, but would be open to a more frank discussion and understanding of why this was chosen. I am concerned that my fifth grader doe not know how to do classic long division. I have taught him myself, but would like to know why the current program doesn't have them learning the basics.

Robbin ScelsoI think this program is idiotic and way too confusing for the kids, and is asking too much of them. Causes undue stress. Go back to the simple way, even if the school system doesn't get GOOD SCORES!
Joseph ScelsoI think it is unheard of that there are kids needing tutors in grammar school. When did this become the norm? I think if the school can't teach the math to our kids than maybe their salaries should be deducted for the cost of a tutor!
Margaret NeubeckThe decision to implement this math program was irresponsible and a detriment to our children's future.
Margaret HumckeI always disliked that everyday math. One must do extra work to arrive at a simple solution.
Nina & Don LongstreetMy daughter misses doing real math! She says the new math is really language arts. The kids have lost a whole year of math! It's ridiculous and a shame!
Mary Ann BeirneMy grandchild attends OFRS, I think its crazy that she calls me almost daily for help on her math homework. Some of the questions I find extremely difficult to explain to her. Why is this?
AnonymousI find it very heartbreaking when my son is always crying that he is stupid and can't get the math. I sit with him and try and show him the best I can.

AnonymousWhy should children be stressed for something so unnecessary. Learning should be a wonderful experience for the child and the parent.
