The Need for Signatures on Petitions and the Status of the Application
October 9, 2007

Why Do We Need Signatures?

We need signatures for a new charter school application that we will submit to the Pittsburgh Public Schools on November 15, 2007. We want this school to open as soon as possible, therefore despite the pending status of the appeal, we believe it is imperative to prepare a new application, one that addresses the district's objections to our initial application, to submit on November 15 should either the Charter Appeal Board reject our appeal, or should they not decide on the appeal at their scheduled November 13 meeting.

On October 2, the appeal of the decision by the Pittsburgh Public Schools to deny our charter was heard before the Pennsylvania Charter Appeal Board. The CAB will vote whether to grant us a charter at their November 13 meeting. The board of the charter school has decided to prepare a new application for our school in case the Appeal Board does not rule in our favor. This new application must be submitted to the Pittsburgh Board of Education by November 15 ….thus the need for signatures to go with the new application.

Please take a minute to click on the link below and electronically sign the appropriate petition to indicate your support. Thank you for helping us with the important work of getting our environmental charter school up and running.

Please note iPetitions will ask you for a donation after you submit your signature. You may choose to contribute or not - any contribution is to the iPetitions website and not to the Environmental School at Frick park. Your signature has been registered as soon as you click the "sign petition >>" button. Thanks!!

Below is the history our application.

*******
On October 13, 2006, the board of directors of The Environmental Charter School at Frick Park submitted a charter school application to the School District of Pittsburgh. The school district review team assigned to assess the application recommended the school district not grant a charter to the application. At its board meeting in January, 2007, the school district voted to deny the charter.

Undaunted, the board of the charter school decided to appeal the decision of the school district to the Charter School Appeal Board in Harrisburg. The Appeal Board heard our case on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 and the Board could make a decision on whether to grant a charter as early as November 13, 2007.

Accordingly, our charter school board and support staff are busy at work preparing the 2007 application. It is for this application we need current signatures of support from:

• parents who are considering enrolling their children in the school and

• residents of the community (both city and municipalities surrounding the city, particularly Regent Square) who support the school.
