STATE OF EMERGENCY
NO SAFE SPACE—AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE
Whereas, the Governer has declared Humboldt County in a State of Emergency.
Whereas, Humboldt cities including Rio Dell and Arcata have declared themselves in State of Emergency.
Whereas, the City of Arcata declared a State of Emergency to authorize thousands of more taxpayer dollars to fund MORE POLICE.
Whereas during the recent storms, there has been NO EMERGENCY SHELTER or SPECIAL RELIEF for unhoused individuals and families.
Whereas, there is little to no shelter for unhoused individuals and families in Humboldt County during the predictable annual rainy season.
Whereas, the rain, flood, wet, cold season is NOT OVER.
Whereas, recent hurricane victims experienced negligence and abandonment from federal government and programs and we expect more from our local government.
Whereas, temporary breaks in the weather do not mean unhoused people are recovered from the shelter crisis this season.
Whereas, the Red Cross staffed a school-turned-shelter in December 2005 during intense storms and is willing to do more if asked
Whereas, our local government has refused to ask for appropriate, widespread help from willing relief organizations.
Whereas, a State of Emergency that could leave people, young and old, sick or even dead, should trigger EXTRAORDINARY RELIEF MEASURES by the county to protect its people.
Whereas, the people of Humboldt must take extraordinary relief measures, as neighbors and fellow humans, to bring people in from the cold and to demand humane conditions and provisions from the City.
Whereas, local government has heard consistent appeals to provide or at least give permission for its unhoused constituents to have a safe place, and have failed to take any positive action toward safe and humane conditions.
We, the undersigned, demand that the local government open public buildings to shelter people during this rainy season and request help from willing relief organizations. |

People Project: a newly forming group and concept which focuses on creating a sustainable, people-run, free campground in Humboldt County (Arcata in particular); tracking human rights violations by police and businesses against houseless people; supporting people who have been ticketed, jailed, or harrassed due to their engag ing in life-sustaining conducts which may have violated local rules; organizing demonstrations related to ordinances and policies in Humboldt County that target homeless, poor, and/or nomadic people; educating unhoused people about their rights and non-violent ways to demonstrate for such rights; raising awareness of and compassion for the varying situations leading to and affecting people on the street; bridging gaps to lesson bigotry toward houseless people; creating a safety and support network for houseless people. |
