The petition
Reasonable class sizes have historically been the hallmark for educational excellence in the Edina Public Schools. While we respectfully recognize the importance of diversity, unchecked admission of non-residents into Edina Public Schools has impacted class size and resulted in overcrowding. These conditions are most prevalent in Concord, Cornelia and Countryside elementary schools. The current sophomore class at the high school is the largest in twenty-five years, and will swell with each passing year further stressing the educational facility infrastructure. This situation is now raising parental concerns with respect to the quality of education received by our children.
As concerned parents, we respectfully request an immediate formal moratorium in the enrollment of any additional non-resident students in Edina Public Schools. The cessation in the admission of additional non-resident students will provide an opportunity for a thorough demographic study, assessment of physical space and future resident educational facility requirements. This study should be completed in an inclusive and transparent manner, involving residents with geographical and grade level diversity. The expected outcome will be the establishment of an optimal level of resident/non-resident students for each class and grade at every facility within the Edina school district and a relevant operating plan to ensure its execution.
