SAVE EMPIRE!! ROLLER SKATING IS NOT DEAD!
It is imperative for the health and well being of the citizens of New York and those who visit, that this rink stay open and others need and must be developed. With the advent of the web and video games it is a well documented fact the youth of today is obese due to inactivity because kids do not go out to play anymore. How sad. It is very possible if we made activities such as roller skating easily available to today’s youth we would not be raising fat kid destined to have health problems and it would keep adults healthier and happier longer. Look at the success that Roller Blading has created outdoors. For adults, a low impact sport as indoor roller skating has kept a segment of the population healthier, happier, and younger than any other, (better than gyms) because the passion towards skating that develops keep people skating into their 80’s. It is imperative that the government and planners see the economic benefit in keeping people healthier, happier, and younger. Skating is a way to do that. It is imperative that the government and planners see that when people develop a routine of doing something on a regular basis and of something that they are passionate for that it improves ones quality of life and transcends to all other segments of the population and neighborhood’s well being. Skating develops a sense of belonging, a sense of family, a sense of well being (the value of real exercise) and a sense of purpose. It is what all religions aspire to do yet there are no places of worship that are slated for destruction. Skating is the best vehicle to achieve this level of quality of life for the people and community. The no smoking laws, no trans-fat laws, no talking on cell phone and all the other ways the government is trying to keep us safer, healthier, happier, and younger is because in the long run, money will be saved by the government and the health care system. By keeping more people alive for a longer time it will eventually yields higher revenues for all segments of our economy. Taking skating away is in direct opposition to the governments efforts to improve health and quality of life. It is hoped that the government and planners can come to realize the potential a simple skating rink possesses. Richard M. Casalino New York

We've skated there before and it was fantastic! Don't take it away from skaters of NYC!
It is a shame that Empire would close as this landmark is a great asset to the community. I am a native New Yorker now living in MD. There is nothing like skating in NYC. I has heartbroken when SkateKey closed... If there is anything that can be done to save Empire it should be done..

First the Rink in the Bronx, now Empire in Brooklyn. There are still people in NYC that enjoy to skate, why drives us all the way to New Jersey. It's not fair!

They always close the things that keep our youth out of trouble. This is one of the only good things we have left in the urban community. Please don't take this away as well.
Good Luck in your efforts to save this storied and revered landmark!.

i live in texas now . the first place i go when i go home to long island is empire . I would be crushed if it was not there and i would not go home anymore. and that is no lie.
When i go to New York i want to visit it. Brisbane, QLD, Australia

I grew up in Crown Heights, BK and went to Utica skating rink as a kid. I then started going to Empire although a hike down to Empire Blvd to skate. This is a gem for the community to retain. With the rise of gangs and mis-directed youth in the community a venue of this magnitude must be maintained and preserved. I have sense moved from BK to NJ and skate at BranchBrook. Nothing is like Empire Rink.... A jewel in the community that must be maintained.

I am dismayed and disturbed to hear that Empire Roller Rink is to be snatched away from our community. As a roller skating enthusiast, I cannot imagine my life without this vital outlet for exercising both mind and body. Roller skating for us is a way of life that has seen generations grow up in this skating rink. Wherever I go other roller skaters know and respect the name of Empire Roller Rink. There simply is no other place like it in America. As a piece of "Americana," roller skating has a unique place in this country's pop culture. I find it sad that Empire is the last roller skating rink in this city and state. To lose it would be to close our eyes to this city's tradition as a world leader in having something for everyone to enjoy. No other city in the world comes close. How can we even think of letting this place and our place in this city's history so easily slip away. A roller rocker forever!
