I LEARNED HOW TO SKATE AT THE EMPIRE WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL AND CONTINUED TO PATRONIZE THE RINK WITH MY CHURCH OVER THE LAST TWENTY YEARS. THE EMPIRE ROLLER RINK IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A HISTORIC LANDMARK TO THE RESIDENTS AND FORMER RESIDENTS OF BROOKLYN. THE AREA THAT THE RINK IS LOCATED IN HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST HIV AND AIDS INFECTION RATES IN ALL OF NYC. TAKING AWAY ONE OF THE LAST CONSTRUCTIVE ACTIVITIES FOR THE RESIDENTS OF CROWN HEIGHTS AND NOT REPLENISHING IT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DELINQUENCY AND A DE-SOCIALIZATION OF THE YOUTH IN THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS. THE CLOSING OF THE RINK IS A CATCH 22. IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE THAT THE RINK OWNERS MUST PROTECT THEIR FINANCIAL INTEREST AND THAT PRESSURE FROM THE CITY MAY HAVE BEEN THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THE RINK'S ULTIMATE DEMISE. DURING THE IMMINENT CLOSING, CITY OFFICIALS EFFORTS SHOULD FOCUS ON OFFERING YOUTH ORIENTED PROGRAMS TO THOSE THAT MAY HAVE A FEELING OF DISPLACEMENT DURING THE EMPIRE ROLLER RINK'S UNFORTUNATE CLOSING. LET IT BE KNOWN, I STAND IN UNITY WITH ALL OF THOSE THAT SHARE MY FEELINGS ABOUT THE EMPIRE AND I WILL DO MY PART TO BE A PART OF THE MOVEMENT TO KEEP THIS THRIVING LANDMARK OPEN TO THE SKATING PUBLIC. |

BROOKLYLN is evolving and it's only right to keep the rink open .It's apart of our CULTURE here in Brooklyn. It has been the place where I have met friends, made friends, As an adult, this is the best outlet for me to relieve my stress while having fun and exercising. It is ashame to think that I might not have this enormous resource anymore. PLEASE KEEP EMPIRE AS A ROLLER RINK!!!! |

Roller skating is not only fun and exciting but it is a great form of exercise. So keep the Empire Roller-Skating Center open and "Keep on Skating". |
