To: The Honourable John Baird, Minister
Environment Canada, Ottawa
Dear, Hon. Baird
"Scientists are noticing a rapid increase in the depletion of the polar ice caps which could be totally melted within the next 25 years, alot sooner then previously expected. This has caught many Scientists by surprise, because the real estate lost in this area over the past 30 years is at a rate of 30%. This is much to large to be a natural cycle of temperature, and is attributed to global warming. According to Marc Serreze, Senior Researcher, US National Snow and Ice Data Center, Boulder, Colorado, "if we think about where we were 25 years ago, we have lost a slice of ice the size of Alaska" For all participants, from Governments to the citizens of the world, the environment is worthy of our attention, and great consideration, and direct action. "Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory." Ghandi. Humans have begun to look at environmental issues, and we are currently at the struggle stage, and it is difficult as we adjust, and change. But, the struggle will be worth it, when the outcome is victory. Surely, environmental victory is the greatest gift the world can give to its self, and should be the most important human want and need" (Pinter, 2007)
". They are all symptoms of the problem rather than its root. General Canadian policy has long gravitated towards monopoly solutions to complex, heterogeneous problems. We have one-size-fits-all systems of handling and transportation, and local, regional, and sometimes federal & provincial monopolies. We tend to invest large amounts of our available capital in a disturbingly small range of options. And once we have made our investments, we defend them vigorously against new market entrants.
The problem is that we are not in the business of change, but of managing change. We like to do things in an organized, “rational” way. But management of innovation is an oxymoron. Innovation by nature is chaotic. It only truly thrives where there are competing models, structures, ideas, investments, and organizations"
Environment Canada has cut funding, and support to it's Environmental subsidy to small companies who use the Technology Verification Program; which verifies the validity of a product, or device in terms of addressing environmental issues.
Currently small companies are awaiting the expensive task of moving through the Environment Canada's verification system. Many of these companies cannot afford to pay the expense of verification which can range from $CAD20,000.00 to $CAD250,000.00. This is a bottleneck in moving environmental technologies onto the market. We need to address environmental issues now.
The spin off effects will be jobs for Canadians, a move towards reducing pollutants, and environmental sustainability, and opening the door to an environmental economy.
Government of Canada
"Sustainable development strategy 2001-
2004 promotes partnership among government,
industry and communities, through which we
can share information on environmentally sound
products, practices and technologies, and
encourage adoption of these innovations by the
agriculture sector through adaptation and
stewardship initiatives." (Canadian Report on Climate Change 2006, Chapter 9, sec. 9.4.5)
Recent subsidy cut for products that contribute to environmental sustainability, is NOT acceptable for Canada, to Canadians, or our world ecosystem. We would like you to put into action a proactive situation for Canadian companies, especially for small business, the environment, and sustainable technologies.
